Return to Rare Spheres

Here’s a rare sphere. It is made of Schalenblende, a mixture of sphalerite, wurtzite, galena, and pyrite/marcasite. This schalenblende sphere is not only rare but also very elegant, with amazingly intricate patterns.

The sphere is also fluorescent. Sphalerite and wurtzite are the fluorescent minerals in the mix and this sphere is stunning under LW UV.  I included photos taken under a black light. The colors are mostly orange and yellow and brighter than the color in the photos.

See  more photos of this sphere including photos under the UV below.

The sphere has a great polish. It has a slight uneven but pleasant feel to it due to the dissimilar hardnesses of the various minerals.

The sphere has about 1.34″ diameter (34.1 mm) and it weighs about 3.3oz.

Origin: Although rare, some of the countries schalenblende occurs are Poland, Germany, Canada, Australia, and Italy. I believe the Schalenblende for this sphere comes from Germany. Well, I got this message from a collector: “Hi, I’m a schalendlende collector from Germany. You can label this piece coming from Wiesloch Heidelberg, Germany”.

Shipping is free in the US only. For other countries there are various options. Please see Store Policies.

The sphere is an outstanding collectors’ item.
