This rare dioptase sphere is a really pretty ball. It has an emerald green dioptase in a matrix of malachite, cuprite, and other copper minerals.
The sphere was made in Africa.
The dioptase sections of the sphere shine like glass. The matrix sections, have an uneven but pleasant feel and they do not have a good polish overall. This is due to the difference in hardness of the various minerals in the matrix (Dioptase is a rather soft material with hardness about 5 but harder than the other minerals in the matrix).
The sphere has about 1.48″ diameter (37.8 mm) and it weighs about 3.4 oz.
