This cobalto calcite sphere is gorgeous and a rare collector’s item.
Dale always experiments making spheres with any mineral that gets in his hands but, unfortunately, not all of them work well. Cobalto calcite is one of them. Usually cobalto calcite comes in very thin layers of crystals (mostly druzy) on matrix. Therefore it is not suitable for sphere making because all the crystals are lost in the process of cutting and polishing.
This stone worked exceptionally well and the sphere is exquisite. There are very gemmy and transparent cobalto calcite crystals in hot pink and some lighter pink color in a mostly white matrix. Some sections of the sphere are fluorescent and glow a beautiful pinkish red under a SW UV light. There is also a “mouth” like vug (natural void) and pyrite specks all over.
This calcite sphere has about 1.98″ diameter (50.4 mm) and it weighs about 7 oz.
