This cobalto calcite sphere is rare and exquisite. Dale made the sphere and the stone comes from Morocco. The sphere is rather large for its kind, and it is fluorescent (bright red SW UV).
Dale always experiments making spheres with any mineral that gets in his hands but, unfortunately, not all of them work well. Cobalto calcite is one of them. Usually cobalto calcite comes in very thin layers of crystals (mostly druzy) on matrix and as such is not suitable for sphere making. This is because all the crystals are lost in the process of cutting and polishing. However, sometimes, cobalto calcite stones, like this one, work exceptionally well.
This sphere is very crystalline, translucent to transparent, and has vugs with beautiful crystals. Its color is sweet pastel pink and the polish excellent. See more photos of this sphere below.
The sphere has about 2.45″ diameter (62.4 mm) and it weighs about 11.3 oz.
