4.36″ Rare Hematite Metal Sphere SPR34
Hematite is a very common mineral and often combined with other minerals. It usually occurs on the surface and the shallow earth crust.
The hematite in this ball, however, is not common at all. The material was mined many years ago from a very small and unusual outcrop. The hematite, instead of the usual massive metal, had a lattice pattern.
The miner made a few spheres from this hematite and we were lucky enough to buy most of them (something like the early bird…). The spheres sold very quickly. This one was ours and in our personal collection until now.
The sphere is large and heavy and it has an awesome lattice pattern with many voids. Parts of it remind me of span hematite “yarn”. The ball is very shiny and very attractive. It is an outstanding collectors’ item.
It has a 4.36″ diameter (110.8mm) and it weighs about 6.2 lbs.
