Mary Ellen sphere

The red color is due to the iron oxide that resulted from the oxidation of the iron in the formation. The oxygen for the oxidation supplied by cyanobacteria which produced the oxygen during their photosynthesis process. The oxidation occurred  two or more billion years ago and affected the upper layer of the formation. The non-oxidized lower layers are green and black.
